Caring for Rosacea: The Different Types, How To & Natural Treatments

If you suffer from rosacea, you already know how troublesome and frustrating it is to deal with, especially when you’re experiencing a flare-up or constant redness. This complex inflammatory disorder has a wide range of symptoms and triggers can appear on any skin type from dry to oily and sensitive skin.

To add to the complicated nature of the skin issue, there's actually three different types. Though they all fall under the rosacea umbrella, these subtypes can affect your skin in different ways which is why it's important to know the difference between them. It's also why, when treating rosacea, getting it looked at by a physician is essential to ensure the diagnosis is accurate, and suggested medical advice fits the rosacea type. The varying rosacea subtypes have different degrees of intensity and this article will help steer you in the right direction for what might be going on with your skin.

Rosacea is a common genetic and inflammatory skin condition, so if you do suffer from it, you're far from alone. Unfortunately, flare ups can be uncomfortable and caused by a number of things including; hot or sunny weather, spicy food, chocolate, caffeine, stress, medication, or anything else that may give you, as a unique individual, any sort of sensitivity.

Overall, when you suffer from rosacea it’s good to know what type you have and also what triggers your flare ups. Without this, it’s extremely difficult to keep rosacea at bay while you live your day to day life.

Types of Rosacea

Type 1- Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea (or Vascular Rosacea)

This form of rosacea consists of red areas on skin, including the face, where small blood vessels are sometimes visible. This subtype can also cause the skin to feel warmer than usual.

Type 2- Papulopustular Rosacea also known as Inflammatory Rosacea

In addition to facial redness this type of rosacea appears as red bumps (papules) and sometimes pus-filled spots (pustules) that are typically located on the chin and cheeks, quite often these are painful to touch. This form of rosacea is often misdiagnosed as acne, so you’ll want to pay close attention to your symptoms so that it's properly treated.

Type 3- Phymatous Rosacea

This subtype of rosacea may make your skin feel thicker, irregularly bumpy and enlargements can appear on the face, usually on the nose and chin.

Fitglow's Rosacea Care Line

Curious about our lineup of products that help manage and care for rosacea symptoms? Learn all about them below.

Gentle Ceramide Gel Cleanser

The Gentle Ceramide Gel Cleanser creates a healthy and calm environment for every skin type, especially delicate, sensitive skin with rosacea. This gel cleanser is super gentle yet highly effective, focusing on supporting your skin's protective barrier. By replenishing the skin with essential ceramides, it helps lock in moisture and directs hydration to where it is needed most in the skin. In addition, this restorative formula helps increase and rebuild the skin’s resiliency and minimize transepidermal water loss, while its cooling gel texture calms irritation and reduces heat—which is essential when it comes to easing rosacea symptoms.

Cleansing Tips for Rosacea:
To break down makeup, apply 1-2 pumps of the Gentle Ceramide Gel Cleanser onto your face by gently massaging with clean, dry hands directly onto dry skin. Add lukewarm water and rinse thoroughly to remove. Do not use a washcloth or cotton pads; this cleanser was made to be removed without any added rubbing or friction to minimize aggravating rosacea.

Rescue + Reset Mist

After cleansing, to tone and reset the skin, the Reset+ Rescue Mist creates a calm and purified environment while minimizing inflammation, irritation, and factors that can lead to stressed skin. This rescuing treatment is powered by hypochlorous acid, a gentle yet highly effective antimicrobial molecule naturally produced by your body's own white blood cells. For rosacea-prone skin, hypochlorous acid acts like a cooling fire extinguisher. It rapidly neutralizes the bacteria that can trigger inflammatory bumps and pustules, bringing down heat and redness on contact. By creating a safe, antimicrobial environment, it allows your compromised skin barrier to heal and defend against environmental triggers without any stinging or burning.
Tips to calm irritated rosacea:

Spray the Reset+ Rescue Mist on the skin following cleansing and before applying treatment products. This creates a clean, calm canvas that increases your subsequent formulas' penetration into the skin and overall efficiency. We suggest reapplying throughout the day to immediately soothe inflammatory flare-ups and keep the skin barrier clear. To really calm heated rosacea, keep the Reset+ Rescue Mist in the refrigerator and spray as needed for a blast of cooling relief..

The Cloud Collagen Oil will deeply absorb into the skin to reduce irritation while minimizing inflammation and redness. This oil-serum hybrid rebuilds and replenishes the moisture barrier with Amaranth Squalane, Chia Seed Extract and Cloudberry Seed Oil. It’s also a moisture-booster and will help to retain hydration while minimizing signs of irritation.

Application tip:

Apply the Cloud Collagen Oil to damp skin by gently pressing into the face, neck, and decollete, really focusing on areas affected by rosacea. Follow with your Fitglow moisturizer or the Redness Rescue Cream (a favourite amongst our community members with rosacea). For combination/oily skin you can use this oil on its own.

Redness Rescue Cream

Reducing redness is made easy with our multi-functional Redness Rescue Cream. This redness treatment is supported and recommended by the National Rosacea Society for its ability to calm stressed skin naturally with a soothing C3 Plant Blend and Wakame BioFerment. These extracts protect the skin from environmental stressors and target the root cause of redness. For further protection, Zinc helps to minimize irritations and balance skin while the natural green mineral tint immediately reduces the appearance of redness and broken capillaries.

Tips for reducing redness:

When applying on top of inflamed or sensitive rosacea skin, warm the product in between hands then pat and press this cream into the skin and gently blend. On areas with more redness, layer on a bit more of the formula on top with a gentle patting motion until it's absorbed. If more redness coverage is needed, we suggest applying our Correct + Green to areas of redness after the application of the Redness Rescue Cream.
