Skincare 101 - What is Double Cleansing?

Double cleanse = double results! The double cleanse method is a two-step cleansing procedure that is very popular in Korean skincare and is becoming more and more popular as people catch on to it. The first step is an oil cleanser which removes makeup and sunscreen. The second step of the double cleanse is using a water-based cleanser like a gel cleanser or milk cleanser to remove dirt and any residue left on your face. Even though doing a double cleanser means double the amount of time, it will help in the long run. We should not get lazy when it comes to skincare!

Doing a double cleanse is important morning and night but especially important at night because of the makeup that has been sitting on your face all day. This method ensures that your skin is getting the deepest cleanse possible. Doing a double cleanse will not dry out the skin as it will help balance your skin. Oil cleansers do not strip your skin of the ceramides and lipids that help keep the skin healthy and balanced.

Using an oil cleanser will also help brighten your skin and improve elasticity. Cleansing your face twice helps to remove any dirt, sebum, and dead skin cells that are building up on the skin. It should be done morning and night as well as after workouts or excessive sweating. Not cleansing your face properly can lead to breakouts and aging. People with all skin types can do a double cleanse. Washing your face twice with your normal face cleanser will not work. You need that oil cleanser to extract all the oils built up on your skin.

Oil cleansers are great for removing makeup even waterproof makeup. If you are wearing heavy makeup, this cleanser is a great option. An oil cleanser will remove what other cleansers cannot. They can be used around your eye area as they are great for even removing mascara. They can be used not just at night to remove makeup, but also in the morning to remove any sweat, sebum, and leftover products from your nighttime skincare routine that built up overnight.

Oil cleansers have emulsifying ingredients. An oil cleanser is great for removing pore-clogging debris and pollutants. Anyone can use an oil cleanser even people with oily skin. Many people with oily, acne-prone skin think oil cleansers are not for them when oil cleansers are actually a great choice. Oil works better to get rid of oil than water and it will not make your skin oilier. This is because oil draws out any oil on your face like sunscreen and sebum while oil and water do not mix. This is why using an oil cleanser is very important because a water-based cleanser will never remove the sebum and oil-based impurities like an oil-based cleanser will.

An oil cleanser should be the first step of your skincare routine and the water-based cleanser should be the second step. The oil cleanser should be applied on dry skin with dry hands and massaged into the skin with your fingers in upward circular motions for around 1 minute. An oil cleanser needs to be applied to dry skin or else it will not emulsify. By applying to dry skin, the oil breaks down makeup and anything built up in the skin like pollutants. Once the cleanser is massaged into dry skin, you can then add a splash of water to emulsify the product and massage your face again.

It should be rinsed off with warm water because hot water dries out the skin and strips the skin of its natural oils. Oil cleansers can leave a bit of a residue which is one of the reasons why it should be followed by a water-based cleanser afterward. The water-based cleanser will remove dirt and whatever the oil cleanser did not pick up. You should make sure you are picking a gentle oil cleanser and a gentle water-based cleanser with no added fragrances. Our oil cleanser is the Makeup Cleansing Oil. When you use a harsh cleanser, your skin can start overproducing oil. This can lead to clogged pores which leads to acne.

Doing a double cleanse will help your skincare products absorb into your skin better. It will help give you that healthy glow and overall healthier skin. It is especially important if you live in an area where you are exposed to a lot of pollution. Even though doing a double cleanse adds a couple of extra minutes to your skincare routine, it is clearly worth it!
